Personally, from the view of an advocate, I believe the AmpKit is more than just for "headphone practice". With the correct gears, you can use it for practice or for shows, small and big. I emphasise correct gears. Last Saturday did not have the correct gears. No offense to the venue owners. In all fairness, a rehearsal room is not conducive to do any shows. But in true underground/DIY spirit, I just made use of whatever limitations there were. The PA board does not have pan knobs, so the bass and guitars were "competing for spaces" in the speakers, which are not exactly full range speakers. It's been 3 months since I used AmpKit and I must say that I absolutely am loving it! Sure, there's still room for improvement but at the moment I'm enjoying what it has to offer. I bought the Iphone because of the AmpKit app. I was sold because of the AmpKit's cool graphics and interface, and most important of all it has a good sound distortion wise. Many emulator devices eg multi-fx floor units and computer recording softwares sound unreal and digital, well at least in my opinion. Not the AmpKit. The sound is organic and not digital at all. Go to youtube and check out Phil Collen of Def Leppard demoing the AmpKit at the recent NAMM! To the casual guitarist who is an Iphone/Ipod Touch/Ipad owner, you may want to think that the AmpKit is just another novelty app designed primarily for hobby guitar playing or 'headphone amp' practising but in my opinion, it's more than that. Couldnt record it with my Audacity software on my home laptop, too much latency. So i tried it with the Pro-Tools at workplace. Well, it worked. No latency problems. Ok, this is just a demo of the Chugga Ritual version of Fractured Skull's Swimming In Toxic. Yup many unnecessary parts from the original have been cut. Guitar was a Craftsman Fender Strat wannabe tuned to E standard. You read it right folkies. It doesnt have a humbucker pickup at the bridge, so it's a bit or a lot thinny. The drums is just 'finger drumming' on my kids' toy keyboard. Yeah, it doesnt have that modern polished drum sound. Ok on the AmpKit, I used for simulators: Peavey 6505+ head, with a Taos Rectifier 4 x 12 cab and two pedals: the Noise Gate and Elevenizer( Tube Screamer) with a SM 57 mic simulator. Those were for the left channel. YES 4 STRINGS......on a 6 string guitar. Call it nonsense, call it blasphemy, call it me copying Max Cavalera, whatever. It's actually quite LIBERATING, well at least for me. So the 666-million dollar question - WHY DO IT BO? First, the cliche reason - following the gospel of Max Cavalera since I'm a Max fanboy. But then again, I've always been a Max fanboy. Why now? So the second reason, functionality. How so? Simple. I don't play leads, I don't play clean chords, I only play distorted power chords and riffs using the four low strings. So I can make do without the top two strings. Third reason - I'm a sloppy player. My right hand don't always make a grip and my fingers will sloppily hit the high strings unintentionally. Removing the two strings makes the playing sound tighter. Last reason - it's a nod to minimalism. Yup less is more. I was intrigued. Are they a doom metal / sludge band? Not many of those in Malaysia. In fact I dare say, now that I've heard Wynken Delirium's music and live performance, a RARE commodity. Present day Malaysia is not a hotbed for anything heavy metal or traditional hard rock. It's INDIE-LAND!!! It's their time now! Sure the otai metal bands or the otai rock kang-kang bands are still around but is there still a consumership, a decent sizeable one that can fill the halls of metal gigs or buy the bands DIY products? Maybe there is still but more likely the number has downsized considerably. Can a Malaysian metalhead shed light on this???? Yes, I was a tube-amp snob, an advocate for pedalboards loaded with countless stompboxes and hating the digital multi-FX floor processor with a passion. But I have made that paradigm shift! How come? Coz I let my ears be the judge. Yes boys and girls, when you let your ears be the judge, walls of ego come crumbling down faster than a stacks of Marshalls come tumbling down after the encore! And the best part is if you start letting your ears be the judge, you'll probably save a lot of $$$$. As a metal guitarist, I have narrowed down my criteria of what a good metal distortion tone is to a few factors: a. it has to sound warm, has tight lows and has that top end bite to make the notes clear. b. It must be able to cut through the band. c. It must be able to sound good at extreme low tunings. Simply because the Bualgitar KTS model was not as successful as I would like it to be. The content was alright/decent but the EAM ( economic activity model ) is wrong on many fronts. Other than that, I find the audience attention span to be very short for a 2 hr talk. That's why I moved from Bualgitar KTS to BMM. To have bands' performances to illustrate points. Other than that having bands be part of the knowledge transfer is a better learning experience for the audience. It is less boring. Besides, the BMM platform can be seen as a showcase for metal bands and a way for them to have a 'soundcheck' before their 'bigger' shows. Lastly, I believe in knowledge transfer and I want to enculturalise the investment in knowledge acquistion of the guitar playing culture, especially in metal guitar playing. It is more like a workshop. Call it edu-tainment if you must. Why? Coz BMM is a 'show' in which host or performers can engage the audience by asking them about the following: Can the vocals be heard? Is guitarist A louder than guitarist B? Is Mr Bassist loud enough? Can you hear Mr Shredder's shreddings? Yes ladies and gentlemen. It is not a show as in the traditional gig sense, it is a show where everybody learns. The bands, the audience and the host/organiser. That is why there's probably more talk than songs.
